How to Be Prepared for Chilly Spring Boat Days

March 02, 2017

Winter is coming to an end, lakes will thaw, and spring boat days are ahead.

Weather is unpredictable, especially in the northern half of the United States. Spring brings sunny days that mislead you into thinking it's warm out only to walk out into less than desirable temperatures. So, let's talk spring boat days. While chilly days can sound daunting, outfitting yourself with the right gear can make all the difference. In fact, you might find yourself enjoying spring sessions!

HOW TO BE PREPARED

Boardshorts

Boardshorts are meant to be stylish, comfortable, and loaded with performance features, so warmth isn’t usually a selling feature. How do you hold in heat while not wearing a bulky wetsuit? Compression shorts. Let’s specifically look at the Oakley Gripper Shorts. These were intended for big wave, salt water surfers. That means they're durable, more thick, and don’t absorb water much. While your legs might not roast in these things, they’ll provide some extra warmth.

Gloves

One of the areas where the human body loses heat the quickest is in the fingers. You can feel the tingle in your hands as soon as you jump in the cold water! We have the solution for protecting your paws - Quiksilver Wetsuit Gloves. They provide 3mm of neoprene goodness to keep your hands warm and toasty regardless of chilly spring weather. They're super easy to pull on and off and come in a variety of sizes to fit any hand.

Towel

Bringing a towel on a chilly day (or any day really) is a no-brainer. So, let’s take it a step further. Introducing the Liquid Force Changer Towel - a revolutionary clothes changing experience. You now can maintain towel warmth while changing back into your street clothes or bathing suit. Don’t thank us - thank Liquid Force.

Long Sleeve Jacket

Typically, heavy duty neoprene long sleeve tops are just too much for chilly spring days. If you’re looking for enough neoprene to keep warm but you can still do cartwheels in - the Quiksilver Syncro 0.5mm Jacket should be your go to. Note: this is an excellent choice for spring skiing for southern states. Located in northern states, you might want to consider something with 1.5mm or 2mm neoprene like the Quiksilver Syncro 1.5mm LS Jacket

Sweatshirt

Similar to a towel, a sweatshirt is a necessity on the boat for chilly spring days. You essentially have the choice of quick dry UV resistant, lightweight, or standard material for hoodies. The standard hoodies are useless once wet due to dry time, and the quick dry hoodies don’t provide enough warmth. We recommend something lightweight, like the Liquid Force Samwell Hoodie. It’s lightweight and easy to throw on. It will protect you against the chilly weather and dry faster than your standard hoodie. Added plus: front pockets to keep your hands protected!
